What to Expect
Before the appointment
After booking an appointment online or with us over the phone you will receive an email containing your initial intake paperwork. This email will also contain a prompt to create an account with us that will allow you easy access to booking, canceling, and rescheduling appointments online at any time. It’s important to complete these forms ahead of time in order to save time and to ensure that we can see you at your scheduled time. The intake forms give us a deeper understanding of what is currently going on and what else may have led to your symptoms.
At the appointment
After a warm welcome from our staff here at Henstock Chiropractic, you will sit down with the Doctor to go over your initial intake paperwork and your goals of care or what you want to achieve. The Doctor will go over what Chiropractic is, what it can do for you, and how we can help you achieve those goals. You will be taken through a few structural, functional, and neurological exams to get a full picture of your body’s current state. An explanation will be given to you of what is happening in your body so you have a better understanding of what is actually going on. The Doctor will come up with a personalized care plan for you based on all the information collected and to help you achieve your outcome goals. We use a variety of techniques in our office that allow us to provide you with care that is the most appropriate for you. We can also schedule your care plan appointment times ahead of time to find a schedule that works best for you.
Healthy practices for after the adjustment
Drink plenty of water and take it easy after your adjustment. Some soreness may occur after the first adjustment and is a normal part of the healing process as normal function is restored and the body adapts. If this is the case, ice can be applied to the area for 10-15 minutes every two hours as needed. Some tiredness may be experienced, as the nervous system restores from a sympathetic to a parasympathetic state, and it is also normal for babies to sleep longer after their adjustment.
Chiropractic Services
To understand how our chiropractic services can help you, it’s first important that you know what chiropractic care is and how you can benefit from it. We feel that this is best described in an article written by Dr. Chad Schleiger D.C. in the Pathways magazine published by The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA).
“What is Chiropractic? – By Chad Schleiger, D.C.
Chiropractic is the purest, unadulterated form of healthcare. As Chiropractors, we put nothing in and take nothing out. We only use what the body has, remove interference in the master healing system of the body, and allow you to perform, heal, and operate at your full potential.
The purpose of chiropractic care is not the treatment of conditions or disease, but the restoration of normal body function. Chiropractors work with the nervous system through gentle spinal adjustments that help reduce stress-related interference to the nervous system, thereby enhancing overall function.
Every single system of the body—circulatory, hormonal, reproductive, glandular, digestive, eliminatory, immunological, muscular, respiratory, and skeletal—depends on the optimal function of the nervous system. Without it, we cannot function and express life in the most optimal way, despite regular exercise, a nutrient-dense diet, and minimal daily stress.
Chiropractic is designed on the concept of vitalism. Chiropractors believe that the body has an innate intelligence to healing, and disease occurs when the body’s natural ability to adapt to life’s forces (stress, environmental toxins, traumatic events) is interrupted. The thing that disrupts this communication pathway is called a subluxation, which interferes with the normal function of the nervous system. Once a subluxation is removed through a very specific, safe, and controlled force applied to a joint, the interference disappears and the body’s nervous system is able to function optimally.
In essence, true healing comes from within the body rather than from the adjustment itself.
Generally speaking, conventional medicine is founded on an outside-in approach, where healing comes from something being added to the body, such as medicine or surgery. Chiropractic is based on an inside-out approach, where healing occurs when the body’s own healing powers are activated.
Furthermore, the conventional healthcare system is mechanistic, in that it views the body broken down into its distinct mechanical parts, and there’s a specialist responsible for caring for each individual system. A healing model based on vitalism, however, believes that the body is a dynamic, ever-changing organism, continuously adapting to its needs and desires. Vitalism also assumes that there is an intelligence and order within the organism that is designed to heal the body, and every system in the body coordinates functions with each other system.
What is a subluxation?
Vertebral subluxation is one of the most overlooked forms of neurological dysfunction affecting society today. Subluxation robs individuals of health, function, and well being, yet most people have never heard the term.
According to the World Health Organization, a chiropractic vertebral subluxation is “a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity, and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity, which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity.”
Who is chiropractic for?
We believe that everyone should be under regular chiropractic care. Regardless of age or history, the chiropractic approach will improve a person’s inherent ability to function and thrive. A community full of individuals and families functioning at an optimal level is our goal.”
Injury Prevention
Injuries happen in the body when it is unable to adequately adapt to the stresses that are placed upon it at any given time. Whether it is something you’ve done a thousand times such as bending over to pick something up, a new task you are asking your body to perform, or you are an athlete pushing your body to improve your physical performance. The injuries occur when the body can no longer handle the stress it’s under. Common factors that contribute to injuries include abnormal or deficiencies in biomechanics, decreased proprioception, and muscular inhibition (decreased muscle facilitation) or weak muscles.
Chiropractic care can decrease joint stiffness, improving its mobility, biomechanics, function and proprioception. According to a study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, spinal manipulation has been found to reduce muscle inhibition, which also increases its muscular function and facilitation. Therefore, by addressing these common factors through chiropractic care, we are able to allow your body to better adapt to stresses placed upon it and reduce the risk of injury.
At Henstock Chiropractic, we conduct a comprehensive examination to detect deficiencies in your body’s biomechanics and provide you with the tools and treatment your body needs while addressing any muscular imbalances you may have to get you back to feeling and being your best. Whether you are performing your day to day activities or improving your athletic performance, we tailor our care to meet your life’s demands.
Pediatric Care
As babies grow through their infant and toddler stages they reach developmental milestones that build on each other and are crucial for the neurological and musculoskeletal systems, such as cross crawling for infants. When there is interference within the nervous system it can delay the progression through these milestones and also neurological development. Chiropractic removes the nervous system interference through extremely gentle adjustments (less pressure than to test the ripeness of an avocado), which restores communication between the brain and the body. This allows for better proprioception, adaptation, and neurological and musculoskeletal development.
Athletic Performance
Regardless of the sport you play, being an athlete means training and exercising rigorously to constantly improve your performance and get ahead of the competition. While athletes tend to live a healthy lifestyle, they place their bodies under tremendous stress. This puts them at a higher risk for injury that can hinder their performance.
A recent study published in 2018 found that neck dysfunction impairs neck and limb sensorimotor function and motor control as well as impacts cerebellum function during motor acquisition tasks. They also found that spinal manipulation restores processing and integration of sensory input from the neck, which influences motor processing in the cerebellum and primary motor cortex. In other words, spinal manipulation has a positive impact on hand-eye coordination. Chiropractic care can also decrease joint stiffness, improve mobility, biomechanics, muscle facilitation, and proprioception. All of which are important components to improve your overall performance.
It’s no coincidence that the vast majority of top level athletes include chiropractic care as an important part of their lifestyle to improve their overall function and performance, decrease recovery time, and reduce the risk of injury.
Our athletic performance specialist has the expertise and skills needed to address issues that athletes commonly face such as altered biomechanics, which can lead to joint stiffness, muscle imbalance, decreased performance and injury. Call us today to make an appointment with our Castro Valley athletic performance specialist.
Prenatal Care
A lot of changes happen within the body during pregnancy that can cause pelvic misalignment and altered biomechanics, which can lead to symptoms such as sciatic and round ligament pain. Chiropractic adjustments align the pelvis to improve its neuro biomechanical function during pregnancy and help the body adapt to the constant changes that are happening within it. This applies to post-partum as well, as the body heals and returns to normal.
Webster Technique
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation and SI joint dysfunction. In doing so, neurobiomechanical function in the pelvis is facilitated.
This analysis is performed by specially trained chiropractors that assess the bones of the pelvis and the muscles and ligaments that attach to the pelvis.
Restored neurobiomechanical function of the pelvis means reduced tension on the uterus, more room for baby, reduced labor time, easier birth, and can also decrease sciatic pain.
The Webster Technique is safe, gentle, and effective! And not just for pregnant moms. We also use pregnancy pillows for added comfort during the adjustment.
